July 5 Cleanup - Progress, While the Year-Round Work Continues

There is encouraging news from this year's July 5 Beach Cleanup.

This year, 601 volunteers removed 39,140 pounds (19.57 tons) of trash from our beaches. Last year, 522 volunteers removed 53,440 pounds (26.72 tons).

That's more volunteers and 14,300 fewer pounds of trash.

We don't know exactly what contributed to this encouraging trend. Education, community outreach, responsible choices, changing visitor behavior, and many other factors may all have played a role.

Whatever the reason, we're grateful.

While this is worth celebrating, our work is far from over. The July 5 cleanup is our largest event, but it's only one day in GrassRoots Garbage Gang's year-round commitment to protecting 28 miles of Washington coastline. Marine debris, ocean plastics, litter carried by rivers, lost fishing gear, and everyday recreation continue to impact our beaches throughout the year.

To every volunteer, partner, sponsor, and supporter—thank you. Your time, generosity, and dedication are making a real difference.

Our hope is simple: that future July 5 cleanups continue to bring out hundreds of volunteers while producing smaller and smaller piles of trash.

Because the cleanest beach isn't the one with the biggest cleanup—it's the one where there's less to clean up.

Together, we're keeping our beaches clean, safe, and beautiful for everyone.

Beach cleanups keep our beaches safe clean & raise awareness

A serene landscape with mountains, a lake, and a clear blue sky reflecting on the water.

Join the GrassRoots Garbage Gang in our mission to keep our beaches pristine and safe!

Every July 5th, community members come together for a coordinated beach cleanup effort along the Long Beach Peninsula. Additionally, our Adopt-A-Beach program allows volunteers to regularly maintain and care for specific sections of the coastline they've adopted. There are numerous sections available for adoption, providing ample opportunities for individuals, groups, clubs, and businesses to get involved.

Beach cleanups play a crucial role in preserving the beauty of our shores, ensuring they remain safe and clean for everyone to enjoy; marine life included! By participating in these efforts, you not only contribute to the well-being of our ocean and beaches but also help raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

We believe in the power of community action, environmental responsibility, and the profound impact of collective efforts. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to protect our oceans and shorelines by tackling marine debris one cleanup at a time. We believe that every piece of litter removed from our beaches is a step towards a healthier marine ecosystem and a cleaner, safer environment for all. Together we can make an impact on the health and safety of our beach for both humans and wildlife.
